New Westminster High-Rise Tower

New Westminster High-Rise Tower

Residential Tower & Heritage Restoration

The restoration of New Westminster’s historic Holy Trinity Cathedral and the construction of an adjacent residential tower presented a number of challenges primarily related to a tight building site and the need to accommodate a number of uses and access needs including access to a nearby rapid transit station and a memorial garden.

By designing a slender tower and by utilizing the top of the parking structure as a habitable space and aligning it with the main floor of the church building it became possible to create a plaza that became an extension of the cathedral’s interior space. The plaza opens a new area of community and gathering space for the congregation. This plaza also becomes the main access point for the church and the focal point of outside activities before and after services and celebrations such as weddings and funerals. The plaza also includes a meditation circle walk.

In addition to the residential tower, the design also includes private and public parking, a memorial garden and a public passageway to the nearby rapid transit station.
